Going to Inverness twice

By Simon Varwell

Besides the Canada trip in August, I’m also going back to Inverness for a couple of weekends next month.

One will be a whistle-stop tour of various parts of the highlands for a friend’s wedding and various family stuff. The second will be for the annual joinees‘ gathering in Inverness.

So last night I bought train tickets for the latter, and (because of the packed and complicated itinerary) hired a car for the for the former.

I’m a bit apprehensive, actually – I don’t own a car and haven’t driven since the last time I hired one for my previous job. That’s nearly eighteen months ago. I doubt my driving skills will be all that hot after such a long break from behind the wheel, so I’ll have to take things carefully. But to be on the safe side, please avoid the A82 and and A87 that weekend.

So that’s my trips to Inverness.

For now…

the whole of the A82?! I won’t be able to get to town for church or shopping. A weekend stuck on the road to the Isles is quite limiting. Have fun up here in the sunny Highlands.

You never forget how to drive. I just got behind the wheel of my folks Dodge truck yesterday and drove 5 hours from Oliver to Surrey through sun, rain, more rain, cloud, rain, torrential rain and the odd break when I could see the snow capped mountains. I didn’t ever get the urge to drive on the left side of the road (although it was a dual carriage way most of the trip). It felt good to be behind the wheel again, but I still have zero desire to drive in Glasgow. That town’s traffic scares me.

Jon – shopping and church? Not on the same day, I hope…
Chris – glad your right hand side of the road instinct has stayed strong. Hope everything is going OK over there.
    Ian – email on way…
